Which offline map app should you take on a walk?

For street directions on an iPhone, Apple Maps supports offline walking directions in downloaded areas where the feature is available. For a supplied GPX track and downloaded trail maps, Organic Maps is another option. Google Maps can display a downloaded area, while its walking directions require a connection.

Choose the function you need

Apple Maps. In Maps on iPhone, open your profile, choose Offline Maps and add the area around your walk. Extend the selection to cover the start, finish and route back. Organic Maps. Download the region before setting off. The publisher lists offline search, walking navigation and GPX import/export. If a guide sends you a file, import it, reopen the saved track and look at its start and finish over the downloaded map. Organic Maps features

Google Maps. Save the area through your profile’s Offline maps menu. A downloaded city map can help you locate a station or landmark. Google’s offline guidance supports driving within the saved area, and its help page says walking, cycling and public transport directions are unavailable offline. Plan for that difference if you want fresh pedestrian directions on the way home. Google’s offline Maps help

A two-minute test before departure

  1. Download the entire area on Wi-Fi. Include the station, car park or accommodation you need after the walk.
  2. Save the destination and any route file separately. Identify a shortcut or exit you could reach on foot.
  3. Temporarily disconnect from mobile data and Wi-Fi. Reopen the app, zoom into a junction halfway along the route and check that you can see useful detail.
  4. Try the action you will actually need outside. Request a walking route if you need directions, or open the saved track if you are following a GPX. Restore your connection after the test.

A GPX file carries geographic points. The map underneath supplies context such as streets, paths and nearby places. Take fresh closure information from the trail manager before you leave. For remote walks, carry an appropriate backup map and know how to use it. National Park Service navigation guidance

Already have a GPX file?

Our GPX viewer and iPhone import guide lets you preview a route’s outline and measured distance, then shows how to share the original file from Files into Daily Wander. The optional street-map layer loads map tiles online. For a downloaded basemap, complete the area download in your chosen offline app as a separate step.
