Three ways to see Japan on foot
If you want someone to explain what you are seeing, look at Tokyo’s volunteer-guided Asakusa tour. For a half-day you can shape around temple visits, try Kyoto’s Philosopher’s Path. For a walk between two historic towns, give the Magome–Tsumago section of the Nakasendo its own travel day.
Tokyo with a local guide
GO TOKYO’s Asakusa Route includes the observation terrace at the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center, Nakamise Shopping Street and Sensoji Temple. The published tour starts at the tourist information center at Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal and travels across town. Use the meeting point in your confirmation when you plan the morning.
The standard schedule allows about 3½ hours. GO TOKYO also lists a shorter July–September version of about 2½ hours with a different finish. Guiding is free, and participants cover the stated expenses for transport and admission, including the guides’ expenses. Check the date, language, party size, meeting time and total cost when reserving. GO TOKYO Asakusa route and reservations

Kyoto at your own pace
Kyoto Travel maps a 5.8 km station-to-station route from Higashiyama Station to Demachiyanagi Station via the Nanzen-ji area, Eikan-do and the Philosopher’s Path. The tourism office presents it as a running route. At an assumed walking pace of 4 km/h, the moving time works out to about 1 hour 27 minutes. Add time for entrances, photographs, meals and travel back from the finish. Kyoto Travel route and map
For a shorter outing, choose one stretch of the canal and one temple you want to visit. Identify the bus stop or station for the return before you leave your accommodation. Kyoto’s local access guide explains how to reach the Ginkaku-ji end of the path. Kyoto access guide
Magome to Tsumago on the Nakasendo
This is a rural point-to-point walk through the Kiso Valley. JNTO gives approximately 8–9 km and 2½–3 hours for the section over Magome Pass. Time in the two post towns, travel to the start and the connection from Tsumago all sit outside that estimate. JNTO’s Magome–Tsumago itinerary
Start planning with the departure you need to catch at the far end. Work backwards through the walking time, a lunch break and time to explore Tsumago. Check any luggage-forwarding arrangements directly for your date. Download the route area before leaving reliable service.
Build the rest of your day
For a city walk, put one timed attraction on the itinerary and keep the remaining stops flexible. For Magome–Tsumago, reserve the day around the trail and its connections. Our city itinerary planner has a worked example of dividing walking time from visiting time. The offline map guide explains how to check your map before departure.
