How to choose and book a Machu Picchu tour
Choose the circuit and entry time you want, then work backwards to the train, the transfer from town and the place you will sleep. The most revealing question for a guide or tour operator is “Which route code will appear on my entrance ticket?” It tells you which parts of the site the walking tour can cover.
Choose the walking experience
Peru’s Ministry of Culture publishes maps for three circuit families. Look at the map for the individual route, especially if a terrace view or a mountain hike is the reason you are going.
| What you want to see | Circuit to check |
|---|---|
| Upper terrace and panoramic view | Circuit 1, particularly route 1-B, Terraza Superior. A mountain outing has a different code. |
| Classic site visit | Circuit 2. Compare route 2-A with 2-B, Terraza Inferior, on the official maps. |
| Royal sector or mountain route | Circuit 3. Route 3-A includes Waynapicchu. Check its access conditions and walking demands. |
Some route variants are seasonal. Check availability for your date before committing to a return train. Official circuit and route maps
Compare tours by departure point
From Cusco
One common approach runs by road to Ollantaytambo and by train to Machupicchu Pueblo, also called Aguas Calientes. Peru Travel gives approximate journey times of 1½ hours by road and two hours by train on this approach. Add station check-in, waits and the final ascent to the entrance. Ask which station your ticket uses and where the guide meets you. Peru Travel’s access overview
A Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour
Ollantaytambo can serve as both a sightseeing stop and your rail departure point. A two-day example is to spend the first day visiting one valley site, then travel to the Pueblo and sleep there. Visit the citadel at your booked time on day two. Compare packages on the time they actually leave for Pisac, Ollantaytambo or another named stop. Ask which valley admissions and station transfers are covered. Sacred Valley destinations
From Lima
A Lima departure adds the journey to the Cusco region. Peru Travel describes a Lima–Cusco flight followed by the road and rail connections above. Ask for the itinerary day by day. An example with some breathing room gives one day to arrival in Cusco, a second to the valley and train, and a third to the visit. Confirm where the package ends before scheduling your onward flight.
Before paying for a guided tour
To find or check a tour provider, Peru’s tourism ministry maintains a directory of travel agencies and guides. Choose the provider type, search by location or legal business name, and match the listing to the company issuing your quote. Then confirm the date and inclusions with that provider. - Find the available admission. Open the Ministry’s ticket platform, choose your visit date and look for the circuit and route you want. Check the visitor details against the document you will carry. Official TuBoleto entry sales
- Get the tour details in writing. Ask for the walking route, guiding language, group size, meeting point, expected walking time and finish. If someone in your party has difficulty with steps, discuss the exact circuit with the guide before buying.
- Match the connections. Check train stations, transfer times in the Pueblo, the journey to the site entrance and your return connection. Ask which tickets the operator issues and which you purchase yourself.
- Check what happens if plans change. Read the terms for admissions, transport and guiding individually. For an Inca Trail trek, confirm the separate trail arrangements and the operator’s permit process.
- Verify the issued ticket. The Ministry announced a TuBoleto validity check on November 4, 2026. You can look up your record using the options described in its notice. Ministry ticket-verification instructions
On the morning of your visit
Keep your admission, identification, train details and guide’s meeting instructions accessible offline. Check the circuit code once more at the entrance. The official route map shows which paths your ticket covers. Allow time for the descent to the Pueblo before your train departs. Official visitor ticket information
