Choose an Italy walking tour by where you want to finish
A city walk can end at dinner. On the Via degli Dei, the next town’s accommodation shapes the day. On a Dolomites high route, the location and opening dates of the mountain huts shape the whole holiday. Start with the finish you want, then choose your walking days.
A city walking tour in Rome or Bologna
Rome. The city tourism office has a walking itinerary from Termini Station through Rione Monti to the Imperial Forums. It works well for a first afternoon because the station gives you an identifiable starting point and the route leads into the archaeological centre. Choose one place to go inside and leave time for the streets and squares along the way. Turismo Roma’s Termini to Imperial Forums walk
Bologna. Italia.it starts its one-day itinerary near the railway station. Around Piazza del Nettuno and Piazza Maggiore you can spend much of a morning within a small area. For a more focused walk, follow the porticoes through the historic centre. The longer portico toward San Luca starts at Porta Saragozza. Check how far you want to continue and how you will get back. If you book a guide, ask which entrances are included, where the group finishes and how much time you spend inside each attraction. For an independent visit, save the route and give each person one stop they particularly want to see.
Walk from Bologna to Florence
The Via degli Dei crosses the Apennines between the two cities. Italia.it describes an itinerary of about 130 km in five stages. That averages 26 km per stage, and actual days vary with the terrain and beds available. Decide how far your party can comfortably walk on consecutive days before booking each night.
For a shorter trip, pick a stage with confirmed access at both ends. Check current route variants with the trail organiser and arrange luggage transfers separately if you need them. Italia.it Via degli Dei itinerary · Via degli Dei route organisation
Plan a Dolomites walking holiday
A single base with day walks gives you flexibility when the weather changes. On the Alpe di Siusi, the local tourism office describes the Hans and Paula Steger Trail from the church in Compatsch toward Saltria, through meadow and forest-edge scenery. Its recommended season is May to October. For your dates, check the current trail bulletin, access to the plateau and the return service from Saltria. Seiser Alm trail description
A hut-to-hut trip ties each day to a bed further along the route. The Alta Via 1 runs from the Lake Braies area toward Belluno. On the first stage from the lake, the path climbs from the southern shore toward Rifugio Biella at 2,327 m. A lakeside stroll and this stage make very different demands on a party. Read the full stage description and confirm hut opening and availability directly before committing to the approach. Cortina’s first-stage guide · South Tyrol’s high-route overview
For a first week based in one valley, an example plan is an arrival walk, two researched day hikes, a flexible day, then a longer outing if conditions suit. For a continuous trek, put the hut, ascent, descent, junctions and exit options into your plan for each night. A guided operator can help assess whether the proposed stages suit your party. Ask who handles hut changes and onward transport if a stage closes.
